How to Play Would You Rather

Would You Rather is the simplest game on Spice Up and the easiest one to start with. One player is named, two options appear, they pick one and say why. That is the whole game. What makes the adult version work is the options: neither one is safe, and the why is where the evening happens.

How a turn works

1. Tap Start. The app names a player and shows them two options
2. They tap the one they would pick. A mis-tap can be changed until Next
3. They say why, out loud, to the room
4. Tap Next and it passes to the next player with a fresh dilemma

The order rotates through everyone in turn, so nobody sits out and nobody goes three times in a row. One phone, passed around or held by whoever is reading.

What changes at each level

Would You Rather has four intensity levels, and a dilemma is levelled by what it puts in the room rather than how explicit the wording is.

• Gentle: attraction, romance, light touch. Nobody is undressed and no act is named. You could answer it at a dinner table
• Playful: undressing, teasing, long kisses, sensory play. Sex may be implied but is not the subject
• Spicy: sex is the subject and acts are named
• Wild: past the couple. Another person, an audience, a camera, or somewhere you would genuinely be caught

The dial deals the level you pick, not everything underneath it. Turn it to Spicy and every dilemma is Spicy, which matters more here than in most games because a Gentle dilemma dealt into a Spicy round lands flat.

Limits and comfort levels

Every player can set limits and a personal comfort level in Player settings, and Would You Rather reads both. A dilemma that touches a limit somebody set is never dealt to them, and a player who capped themselves at Playful gets Playful dilemmas even when the room is on Wild. Nobody is asked something they opted out of, and nobody has to say so in front of the room.

Two rules the deck follows

A dilemma is always about what you would choose. It never asks you to rank the people in the room or pick between them, because a question with a winner has a loser, and that is not what this game is for. And both options are always something a person might genuinely want, so there is no trick answer and no wrong one.

Playing it as a couple

It works with two, and it works with one if you want to read dilemmas to each other off a single screen. As a couple, the Spicy level is where it earns its place: a dilemma is a low-stakes way to say what you would actually pick, and the other person hears it without having been asked directly.

Where it fits in the evening

First. It needs no touching, no undressing and no nerve, so it is the game to open with while people are still finding their feet. It also goes into the Lucky Dip bowl, where a few dilemmas between rounds of Truth or Dare or Temptation give the room a breather without cooling it down.
